"An explosion of incalculable magnitude in Yellowstone Park propelled lava and ash across the landscape and into the atmosphere, forever altering the climate of the entire continent. Nothing grows from the tainted soil. Stalled and stilled machines function only as statuary. People have been scraping by on the excess food and goods produced before the eruption. But supplies are running low. Natural resources are dwindling. And former police officer Colin Ferguson knows that time is running out for his family--and for humanity..."-- Provided by publisher.

Hey Harry, let's heat things up a little, huh!? Move move move.
Unrelenting slow pace. The next time something exciting happens in this series will be the second time.

While I'm a big Turtledove fan, this series is, as someone else put it, a dud.

My main problem is how little trouble this "mega disaster" causes. I wouldn't be surprised if the USA was in as bad of shape in ten or fifteen years WITHOUT such a disaster. With it, multiply the problems portrayed in this series by 50. I do wonder if, perhaps, that might have been the authors intent: Here's your near future and how to live in it, rather than anything to do with a big event.

My second biggest is that even with things being so (relatively) soft the book mostly follows folks who have it even softer... In terms of his war books: Rather than the equivalent of "front line" soldiers AND the home front, this book is just the home front. On the rare occasions when a character gets somewhere rough, they get back to soft (dull) land pretty quick.

I agree with the previous comment. I'm afraid Turtledove has created a real dud. It's nothing but a boring reiteration of how bad things are.

I can't take this series any more. Yes, it's cold. Yes, the power's out a lot. It's been that way for three books and nothing's happening. Bring back the space aliens or the South winning the war, but spare me from the supervolcano.
