In Early Decision, debut novelist Lacy Crawford draws on 15 years of experience traveling the world as a highly sought-after private college counselor to illuminate the madness of college admissions.

Working one-on-one with Tiger-mothered, burned-out kids, Anne "the application whisperer" can make Harvard a reality. Early Decision follows five students over one autumn as Anne helps them craft their college essays, cram for the SATs, and perfect the Common Application. It seems their entire future is on the line--and it is. Though not because of Princeton and Yale. It's because the process, warped as it is by money, connections, competition, and parental mania, threatens to crush their independence just as adulthood begins.

Whether you want to get in or just get out, with wit and heart, Early Decision explodes the secrets of the college admissions race.

Early Decision follows Anne, an educational advisor who helps high school seniors write the perfect essays to get admitted to their first-choice college. Anne has to work to keep the students from writing sappy and unoriginal essays, while also appeasing the parents who want a say in everything their child writes. The book is a good look at the competitiveness of college admissions and the power struggles between almost-independent teenagers and their parents. Anne and her students are all vivid and flawed characters who just want to figure out what they are meant to do in life.

While this is fiction, it will give you some insight to the college admissions essay. There are a few portions that have gratuitous sex thrown in, so be forewarned if that sort of prose is offensive to you.

Crawford spotlights the madness surrounding the current college application process. Insightful and compassionate, she speaks of what she knows and engages the reader so that we care about these college-bound students as if they were our own children.
