Brubaker's run on Captain America continues with the Avenger contending with a new Scourge, a murderous vigilante killing off retired villains under witness protection. Scourge himself is being manipulated by a familiar face, and the face behind the mask is also familiar, tied to the Captain's past. Brubaker established his take on the character to be a definitive one, and it shows in this volume, with exceptional art by Zircher.
Super-espionage tale reaches a crescendo with a murky mixture of characters from Cap's past. This is probably satisfying only to true fans who can recall the earlier incarnations. This volume includes a reprint of a 1987 issue which serves as a reminder of how far Marvel has come, art- and story-wise.
