In a foster home outside Oslo, a twelve-year-old boy is causing havoc. The institution's steely director, Agnes Vestavik, sees something chilling in Olav's eyes: sheer hatred. When Vestavik is found murdered at her desk, stabbed in the back with an Ikea kitchen knife--with Olav nowhere to be found--the case goes to maverick investigator Hanne Wilhelmsen, recently promoted to chief inspector in the Oslo Police.

(The third book in the Hanne Wilhelmsen series)

Nov 09, 2016

Translated from the Norwegian by Anne Bruce.

Originally written in 1995, it wasn't until 2013 that the English translation was made.
In this instalment of the Hanne Wilhelmsen series, the recently promoted Chief Inspector finds it difficult to find her feet in a role that she finds hard to delegate, share information with her delegates and sharing responsibilities with.
The crime she is investigating is the stabbing death of Agnes Vestavik, the head of a group home for wards of the state in Oslo. Prime suspect is a 12 year old boy who is belligerent and combative to all the workers in the house and who has run away directly after the death. Slowly the puzzle is unravelled with an eye opening twist, and even Wilhelmsen is able to get both her private and work life onto some stable ground.
In the end this is a simple but enjoyable novel to while away a few hours.

Story told from three points of view. Not a surprise ending at all. Still, it is good background for the later novels which are quite good.

" maverick investigator Hanne Wilhelmsen" ? Why does the investigator always have to be a "maverick" ? Can't there exist a non-maverick detective, cop or investigator?
