"Benjamin January's search for a missing man takes him into a dark world filled with grave robbers and slave stealers. New Orleans, 1838. When Benjamin January suddenly finds that his services playing piano at extravagant balls held by the city's wealthy are no longer required, he ends up agreeing to accompany sugar planter Henri Viellard and his young wife, Chloë, on a mission to Washington to find a missing friend. Plunged into a murky world, it soon becomes clear that while it is very possible the Viellards' friend is dead, his enemies are very much alive - and ready to kill anyone who gets in their way"--Amazon.com.

When his jobs completely dry up, January must leave his wife and child in New Orleans for a job that will take him to Washington City. His white friend Henri, wife Chloe, mistress Dominique (January's sister) and their child, plus entourage, go in search of a friend long overdue. January and his sister pose as husband and wife, but must stay in a black boarding house, while Henri and Chloe stay in a fancy white hotel. The couple running the black boarding house are part of the Underground Railroad. Also staying there is a Mr. Poe, who turns out to be Edgar Allan Poe, part of the fun of this historical novel with a new set of characters. The other new twist is that January must confront new dangers in a new city.

Since this is a series, it's nice to get away from some of the usual characters and see our hero more on his own again. Also, I've read a few novels with Edgar Allan Poe as a character, but never loved Poe so much as in this book.

As historical mysteries go, these are great for history lovers.
