Recently, several authors have been rereleasing their older works with a few minor upgrades to keep them current. This one was originally published in 1985. I would have given this book 4 stars, but when Howard was reediting the book, she left in multiple scenes that promote physically abusing one’s partner. When Brett finds evidence that points to Tessa embezzling from the company, he says something about wanting to choke her and turn her over his knee and hit her repeatedly. This book takes place in LA during modern times, not the 1800’s. Needless to say I was a little shocked but thought it was just Brett overreacting. Not so. Later when they find the real culprit, Brett advises another man to beat a woman who is in love with him. “Put her over your knee and whale the living daylights out of her.” Later Tessa asked Brett if he would really beat her, and Brett responded that he was planning on it but didn’t know if he really could. Tessa seemed to accept this as his right.
