Listening to Stacy Keach (!) read the stories and vignettes in this first volume made me realize how little I appreciated Hemingway's artistry.

To be sure, these pieces contain the misogynist, macho Hemingway I remember. Fishing, hunting, bull-fighting. But hearing these recordings, one by one, provides for a nuanced "look" at Hemingway's painful attempts to capture reality, across time, across geography. In this context, his brief "war vignettes" are especially haunting.

Moreover, as Thomas Strychacz writes , the insertion of these vignetttes "present[s] "the incoherence and incompleteness of action," reflecting the "modernist aesthetic of fragmentation..."

Well worth the listen.
