For thirty-four years Fabrizio Collini has worked diligently for Mercedes-Benz. He is a quiet and respectable person until the day he visits one of Berlin's most luxurious hotels and kills an innocent man. Young attorney Caspar Leinen takes the case. Getting Collini a not-guilty verdict would make his name. But too late he discovers that Collini's victim--an industrialist of some renown--is known to him.

A little book. We can only guess about characters traits. The book is about justice. Point: International laws for war crimes sometimes are really surprising, in a negative way. Question – what is a difference between a war crime and follow to the orders of those who are in higher rank? You never can escape of your sins of your past.
There is a remark at the end – That “this novel constituted one of the points of reference” to “appoint a committee to reappraise the mark left on the Ministry of Justice by Nazi past” en German low.
Judging only from books and films about criminal laws in North America, after comparing them with Juridical laws in Germany (how it is described in this book), the atmosphere and the relationships between lawyers in Germany are much more warm, more human, than in North America.

As William Faulkner wrote, "The past is never dead. It isn't even past."

Compact style. Gripping story.

This is a concise gripping tale well told. It starts slowly, establishing a sound basis for a climax that makes the book impossible to put down until the end.

This is a great read and thought provoking. How would America's contractors fare if they were called to account in a fair and impartial court?
