Martin plays a much different Doc Martin in these two movies, from the character in the TV series. I must admit, I like the tv series much more that the movies.
If you love the tv show, you'll hate this! Cheerful, friendly Doc Martin engages in hijinks. No thanks.
Don't get this if you are thinking you are adding a few extra episodes to the television series. This doctor is very different from the one in the series (even has a different surname) but once you accept that the movies are fun. The second one goes a bit overboard with implausible aspects.
I knew the Doc Martin movies (2001) would be much different from the Doc Martin series spin-off (2004 - ?). I was introduced to the series from TPT public TV. Interesting to see Martin Clunes play Doc Martin in a completely opposite character. Interesting and somewhat entertaining but the series is vastly more entertaining!
Better than series.
Enjoyed the movies, but unliked scrubble4 I loved the series. Undoubledly Martin Clunes is a great comedic actor. I must add Port Issac to my list of 'must sees' in England. It is too beautiful.
Doc Martin the movies is much better than the TV series. The character is more multi-dimensional than the anti-social misfit portrayed in the series and the village folk are not all daft. Why did they resort to stereotypical cliches when they produced the show for the small screen?
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I wished the Doc's amiable personality in this film showed a little more in the subsequent seasons/series 1-6. It would be nice to see him smile from time to time each series. I do enjoy all the series thus far, and will feel a bit gloomy when it all comes to an end. =(
These are the two made-for-TV movies that inspired the hit series. They're enjoyable, but Doctor Martin Bamford is not at all the Doctor Ellingham of the series, and I don't think this character would have had a hit TV series. However, it's fun to see where the series started.
Judith (to The Phantom, who's posturing to jelly attack Doc Martin): "PUT... THE JELLY... DOWN!"
