As detective Carol Jordan is set to move from downand-out Bradfield to a new post in nearby--and less crime-ridden--Worcester, Tony Hill, her longtime criminal-psychologist colleague, wonders if there might also be new horizons for their complicated relationship: he and Carol have been brought together professionally over the years by ruthless crimes, which has led to an undeniable--but maddeningly stalled--personal connection.

But sex workers are being targeted and viciously killed in Bradfield, and it's up to Carol to determine if the murders are connected--and where the killer might strike next.

Meanwhile, in a nearby prison, someone is dreaming of rare steak, fine wine--and revenge. Jacko Vance, former sports hero and TV celebrity, murdered almost twenty teenage girls before being caught. He knows exactly who is responsible for putting him behind bars, and Tony and Carol are at the top of the list. Following an audacious escape, he's on the loose and planning to teach them all a lesson they will never forget. Now the pair are squarely in a psychopath's crosshairs--and he's just getting started.

mostly believable characters...well-paced...enough surprises and a bad-guy with the evil media-charm and egotism to keep you interested in his outcome! Val Mcdermid has a twisted sense of people and their darknesses ; I've enjoyed 4 of her books now-

I agree with yafuid. I kept mixing up the characters and the plot seemed derived from a stock thriller-writing course. McDermid is usually fairly good at plotting and is always poor at describing the nuances of her characters. I knew that before I picked up the book. This time, however, even her plot was boring. And instead of providing good insight into her characters' personalities, she resorted to stilted dialog and even more stilted attempts to describe their thoughts.

pretty bad - stilted dialog, stock characters and conflicts, reads like it was auto-generated by picking bits out of any number of better mystery/detective books.

I am so glad I decided to pick up this book. I like flawed main characters and do they ever have them in here. This is the first book I,ve read in this series but it will not be the last.

Another great book from this author with Jordan and Hill as characters. Do not read if depressed...
A+ book. The 2 separate stories are well written brought together at end .
