The year is 1979 and Letty Fleming has taken her three children to her old home in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland as they grieve for their recently deceased husband/father. His death is a mystery of sorts that unravels throughout the novel .At the same time an escaped bear has been spotted on the same Island. The bear fascinates young Jamie who does not understand his father's death at all, and believes that this bear is a connection. Tragedy. grief, healing, understanding, forgiveness, along with an interesting plot combine to make an interesting novel . I especially like the character of nine-year-old Jamie; his mind works differently (but different is different--not wrong-not broken)
