Endearing enough to agree with the writers and the ending. Young American girls, albeit very rich girls making their way into the rigid English class system.
The scene showing the complex personal interplay amongst a peer of the realm, his mistress, his yet to be announced betrothed, I must say, that was nicely done.

Despite the partially "happy" ending, I found this mainly a sad story. The costumes and sets were gorgeous as one would expect of a BBC production, but I felt I was missing a lot of details from the original story (which I haven't read). I felt I was supposed to sympathize with Nan, but mostly I just found her irritating. I had enough interest to watch the whole thing through, but not, I think, to bother reading the book.

I've never read the book, so not sure if this is good adaptation. The first episode was a bit off-putting as I found it difficult to sort out the characters. But, by the second or third episode, I was hooked. Great costumes, great settings (loved the interior shots of the stately homes filled with antiques and art) and a good story.

Even though I love a good victorian drama, this one didn't do it for me. The overacting and almost cartoonish characters had us hit the stop button part way through and not bother to continue. A pass for me.

The Buccaneers sometimes seems to be somewhat of a soap opera; however, the collection clearly and accurately portrays the volitility of life of young women. The main actress is most convincing, and the sets are to die for!
