With a vibrant, fresh style Suzanne Woods Fisher brings readers into the world of a young Amish woman torn between following the man she loves--or joining the community of faith that sustains her, even as she questions some of the decisions of her elders. Her choice begins a torrent of change for her and her family, including a marriage of convenience to silent Daniel Miller. Both bring broken hearts into their arrangement--and secrets that have been held too long. Filled with gentle romance, The Choice opens the world of the Amish--their strong communities, their simple life, and their willingness to put each other first.

Simple writing about a Plain Amish family in present day Lancaster, PA by an author who lives in San Francisco. Having recently returned from a visit to this area and seeing this book for sale in the Amish farm store, I was curious as to what values the story would uphold as I assumed Amish girls would be interested in reading such a book. Since books do have conflicts, I knew that there would be a character or two wanting to leave the Plain life or perhaps marry an Englisher. I was not disappointed. Thus the plot was predictable as was the outcome. This story is indeed Christian lit as the text is peppered with scripture that the characters use to console themselves or to guide their actions/reactions to events. The characters often revert to their own language as I am sure real Amish would do. I chuckled at how quickly the female Amish could come up with a batch of cinnamon buns during an emergency. It surprised me, however, how head strong the author makes her female lead character, a characteristic common in fiction for teens, but I don't know how true that would be for an Amish girl. This book has won an award for Christian Lit.
