Six years after trading in his combat gear for hospital scrubs, Luke Rafferty is faced with things just as heartbreaking as those on the battlefield. The abused children being brought in by the pretty redheaded social worker tug at his soul like nothing he's ever known.

For Devon Manning, being a social worker is a rewarding job, but also a constant reminder of her own troubled youth. Devon takes everything one day at a time-unable to form a relationship with anyone except the children she rescues.

When Luke meets Devon, he thinks he might have found what he's been looking for, but in order to get the life he wants, Luke has to break through Devon's emotional barriers and make her realize that his healing touch might be just the complication her life needs . . .

The marketing department made a misleading book jacket about a romance. The book is really about man's inhumanity to man, violence, torture, war, and one man terrorizing others. While It has a "happy" ending, it will give you vivid nightmares.

This is a novel about hope. Yes, there's pain, violence, hatred, sickness. But there's also love, and people who care. And while that doesn't make everything better, it's something worth fighting for.

Devon lived through hell before an "angel" — a social worker — pulled her out. That's what helps Devon connect with the children and youth that fall under her charge. But she still has battles to fight: allowing herself to get close to the hot doctor—and allowing him to get close to her—is one of them. Just when she thinks that she's finally put the past behind her, her nightmares worsen, and her life starts to crumble down around her.

Devon really hated that hmmmm sound. She suspected it was a mom sound, one moms across the globe made while they were trying to figure how to pry without sounding like they were prying. Of course, Liz Manning had very few qualms about prying. [...]

"Five dates?" Staring at her daughter, she tried to decide if she wanted to squeal with glee—silently, of course—or sulk. Five dates, and Devon hadn't mentioned him. But five dates. Devon hadn't dated the same guy more than once or twice, and she usually only went out a real date a few times a year...
