As I have lived most of my life in the region where I was born, it is easy to lose tough with feelings of alienation that come from leaving home. Every time we read stories of immigration, our connection to the suffering endured by displaced people increases. It is our duty as global citizens to put ourselves in the shoes of others, those whose lives are not as comfortable as our own.

This book speaks of the loneliness endured by a young woman who leaves everything she knows out of a sense of duty which propels her to seek opportunities beyond her stagnant hometown. Finding her way in a new place is difficult, but so is returning home where she sees everything with a fresh perspective. The world is an unsettling place in our twenties, as we try to determine who we are and what holds meaning for us. It was refreshing to revisit this age.

The book is really similar to the movie. I read the book after seeing the movie, and there were only a handful of scenes that were in the book that weren't in the movie. Overall I enjoyed the book. Maybe Eilis seems more like an idealized person than a real person, but I enjoyed it, anyway. The author writes well, too. It was easy to follow.

Not on my list of authors I'd read again. Mildly interesting way to spend several hours if incapacitated or desperate for distraction. HOWEVER!! the film is fantastic. So thanks to whoever moved printed page to film. Totally enchanted.

I loved getting to know Ellis and watching her transform. Listening to Kristen Potter's narration, I felt immersed in an earlier time. Thanks to Potter, I now know that the name 'Ellis' is pronounced 'Aileash.'
