On November 2, 2006, Gayle Haggard's life changed forever when her husband, Ted Haggard, founder of the 14,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs and president of the National Association of Evangelicals, was publicly exposed in a scandal. In the days and months ahead, everything in Gayle's life was at stake-her beliefs, her marriage, and her relationship with the church community she had been a part of for more than 20 years. In Why I Stayed , Gayle walks us through the choices she made in her darkest hour and shares her renewed passion for the central message of the Bible-the liberating message of forgiveness and love. Why I Stayed reminds us of what less-than-perfect people desperately need-a community of family and faith that offers healing love and a path to restoration.

I picked this up from a display in the Sumas library (the display was something like "people who would be interesting to meet" but with a catchier name). Gayle Haggard has a world view I cannot begin to understand. I was totally baffled by her logic and her choices. I I don't know that I would ever recommend this book, but I don't regret reading it. It provided insight into the rise and fall of a mega church and the thought processes of the type of people who would start a mega church and then fall from grace. That is the most positive thing I can say. I would say the wives from Sister Wives make better choices. That is the most kind thing I can say.

I don't read the bible and usually get irritated by books that refer constantly to it but Gayle Haggard's story is remarkable and such a gift to us all. I do read books on forgiveness, though, and this is where it shines. And curiously enough, her biblical references are so well done that the story flows seamlessly. Her quotes from the Psalms read like poetry. She is a woman of strength and integrity and I have been blessed by reading her book.

This is a beautiful book, written with honesty and forthcoming. Mrs. Haggard uses Scripture (the Bible) liberally throughout her book as a base and solid foundation for her life, for her marriage, her career, and of course for dealing with this scandal and everything that came out of it. I read it in just a few days. I highly recommend it.

This is a great inspirational book about love, forgiveness and the hope for something better than ever. Very well written.
