This is the shocking and incredibly true story of the brutal massacre of 11 Israeli athletes by a team of extreme Palestinian terrorists during the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany. From terrorist training in Libya to the terrorists sneaking into the Olympic Village to the tension-filled negotiations to the shocking conclusion at a German airport. For the first time, the lone surviving member of that extremist group speaks. Actual video shot during the crisis is used to help tell the story.

Apart from a couple of questionable choices on the soundtrack (Led Zeppelin? Deep Purple? Really?) and some unanswered questions (why no communication capability among the snipers?, to point out one glaring example), this film is an overview of the Munich crisis which, if anything, shows how not to handle terrorist situations. Maybe it's because there weren't many precedents for such an attack, that the German officials made so many ill-advised choices. My knowledge of history is lacking in this case. My lasting impression is one of incredulity - how could this have happened? I only hope that lessons were learned.

This documentary focuses a lot on the details, such as the exact timings of the key moments in the hostage taking, who was where and when, etc. I'd prefer if they included more commentary on the broader issue (the reaction of the International Olympic Committee, the reaction of other athletes), but it is still a good source of information on the event.

This version uses a lot of old news clips and hence you have to be prepared for grainy images. But the clips represent what actually happened at that time. So as a 'documentary' it was true to the events. But for entertainment I will take 'Munich' by Spielberg over it any time.

Violence: Some pretty disturbing images of dead bodies resulting from explosions and gunshots.
