Imagine that the seas rose and covered most of the land on Earth and a few of the brave chose to settle in underwater farms and you have the setting for Dark Life by Kat Falls. Ty was the first baby born in an underwater community, so he is used to life under the sea. Unfortunately, life is getting more challenging.

This book was a fantastically fun read, so take a deep breath and dive into this one.

Earthquakes and rising oceans have devastated the dry land and forced people to live either in overcrowded stack cities or in the wide open ocean depths. Ty has spent his whole life on the ocean floor and never plans to leave the deep water for the overcrowded land topside. He loves the adventure and danger of life underwater. Then in one day everything changes for Ty. He discovers a wrecked sub with no survivors (while escaping from sharks) and he meets a girl named Gemma who is in search of her missing brother. She's an orphan, a topsider and basically a lot of trouble.
Both Ty and Gemma have their secrets and they don't really see things the same way. Gemma is afraid of the watery world that Ty loves and Ty is freaked out by the idea of going topside where everyone would stare at him (he glows like a deep sea fish!). Together they have to face down deep sea outlaws, sharks, and creepy sheriffs and that's just for starters.
There is mystery, action and adventure that starts out immediately and keeps sailing along until the last page. Supposedly there's a movie coming in the near future which would be very cool! There is also a sequel called Rip Tide so if you get hooked on the adventure of the watery depths you can keep on reading.

great dystopian YA novel. Love the premise of going into the ocean to live, farm, harvest, and how this affects human growth.
Ty is the protagonist in this story, and he has developed a special talent; he rescues a "Topsider" girl, he fights off the Seablite gang... And somehow they are connected.

I personally loved this book. It wasn't too intense, there were no inappropriate scenes and there were just enough action scenes. I asked some people in my class about this book and they all said it was either OK or Amazing.

I started this book with the expectation of mediocracy, having never heard of the author and only knowing it was a young adult novel. I was pleasantly surprised to discover this book is more well-rounded than I anticipated. It's a unique concept that I haven't seen anywhere else- Old West Pioneering meets Deep Sea Science, set in the post-Global-Warming-catastrophe future where space is a premium resource. This novel has it all- romance, adventure, mystery, science fiction, supernatural, and a whole lot of creativity. I was pleased with the amount of actual science and hypothetical science that Katt Falls wove into the story, which served to ground it in plausibility. I also greatly enjoyed her voice and the sense of humor she wove the main characters. I will definitely be checking out her sequel, and recommend this book to anyone who enjoys YA lit, science fiction, and/or supernatural fantasy.

What if we lived underwater?

SPL_Childrens Aug 02, 2012

Ty has always lived with his family on their ocean floor farm deep beneath the waves. He has always felt safe and happy in the undersea world – until now.

A gang of dangerous convicts, escaped from the Seablite Maximum Security Prison, have been attacking homesteads and farms in the underwater settlement where Ty lives. No one feels safe.

The convicts are not only very dangerous, but “damaged,” according to “Doc,” who reveals that the inmates were subjected to mind-altering experiments while in prison. They seem ruthlessly intent on driving away the settlers. If they succeed, where will the families go?

As the attacks increase and the families band together to defend their homes, Ty begins to suspect that there is more going on than an attempt to drive away the settlers. The convicts also appear to want someone from the settlement. Who? Why?

When Ty is captured by the convicts, he overhears a conversation and realizes what they really want. He learns that someone from his own settlement – someone he has known and trusted for years – is far more of a threat to the settlers than the escaped prisoners.

He and his sister Zoe are in particular danger because they have special abilities, which the settlers have named “dark gifts.”

Now it’s more vital than ever that Ty escape quickly to alert his family about the true danger threatening the community.

Kat Falls’ “must-read” story is full of suspense, adventure and intrigue. Readers will be glad to know that a sequel, Rip Tide, has just been published.
