Set in the imaginary European country of Jorgary a couple of generations after Joan of Arc, this is a world in which those who hear Voices and perfom miraculous feats may end up condemned by the church and burned at the stake. Are the Voices saints, as they claim, or are they sent by the devil? This is an exciting adventure, frustrating in that it ends on a "to be continued" note without wrapping up the plot, but that seems to be the trend in publishing these days. The sequel is _When the Saints_.

Anton had told him a thousand times that courage wasn't absence of fear, it was refusing to give in to it.
