Wag! by: Patrick McDonnell is a picture book that addresses the all important question of what makes a dog's tail wag (fwip, fwip, fwip). Or, to be more precise, what makes Earl's tail wag. Patrick McDonnell is the author and illustrator of the award-winning comic strip MUTTS and he brings all the sweetness and humor of the comic into his new picture book. With simple, energetic drawings and brief text, including my new favorite word...FWIP, McDonnell manages to capture the essence of dogginess.
Earl the dog is sound asleep as we start the story and his tail isn't wagging for the moment (sometimes it does wag in his sleep) but he's soon up and about with his tail going like crazy, fwip, fwip, fwip. Jules and Mooch the cats keep trying to explain why Earl has such a waggy tail but are overcome with shyness every time they are asked to explain. We get to see Earl in his many waggy moments while we ponder the eternal question of dog wagginess. Earl's tail wags for many things including snowflakes (fwip, fwip, fwip), belly rubs (fwip, fwip, fwip), snacky-snacks (fwip, fwip, fwip), and chewy toys (squeak, squeak, squeak, fwip, fwip, fwip). But in the end the final answer to the question is the sweetest bit and it's offered by Mooch the cat. Earl's tail wags because of love.
The funny and exuberant pictures and silly sound effects keep this book from becoming too sweet. It is perfect to share with young children but even adults will get a kick out of the story. Dog lovers will immediately know the answer to the ultimate waggy question but will happily go along for the fwippy ride for the sheer joy of it.
This book nicely sums up the various things that dogs love. I love the tail wagging sound used "fwip fwip fwip"!
I love this book! Earl, the little dog who CONSTANTLY wags his tail, reminds me of my little terrier. It's like they're twins or something....
