An epic and heart-rending jungle adventure from the bestselling author of Kaspar and Born to Run. For Will and his mother, going to Indonesia isn't just a holiday. It's an escape, a new start, a chance to put things behind them - things like the death of Will's father. And to begin with, it seems to be just what they both needed. But then Oona, the elephant Will is riding on the beach, begins acting strangely, shying away from the sea. And that's when the tsunami comes crashing in, and Oona begins to run. Except that when the tsunami is gone, Oona just keeps on running. With nothing on his back but a shirt and nothing to sustain him but a bottle of water, Will must learn to survive deep in the jungle. Luckily, though, he's not completely alone... He's got Oona.

A wonderfully crafted masterpeice, this book is a amaglam of poignancy and real life. Oona, an elephant, saves a boy from a tsunami by running into a jungle. They trek through the miles of leafy vegetation together, backing each other up. They'll meet mother orangutans and their babies, and the male orangutan, the Other One. They'll be hunted by poachers and nearly killed, but they'll always get away in the end. But can Will keep living this kind of life?

I have read and reread this book many, many times. It really makes you realize how privileged we are. Will goes through a lot, and to top it all off, is lost in he jungle with an elephant named Oona. I like this book because it is so deep. It reminds you most of all what trust, survival and family really are.

An updated telling of the Jungle Book story with references to current affairs - both political and environmental. A thought provoking read with great opportunities for discussion.
