Where to begin...

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao defies categorization, and simply needs to be read slowly, digested and embraced.

Oscar is nerd and anti-hero. Appealingly outrageous, in the vein of Ignatius Reilly. Yunior, the often unreliable narrator, serves as both storyteller and teacher. Yunior is deceptively ingenuous; not just an observer, he is another "Child of Trujillo" and is central to the action of the plot.

This audiobook includes the early anthology Drown, stories which also feature Yunior. These stories are uneven in quality--certainly not as adept as the near-flawless Oscar Wao. "Negocios" stands out; it approaches novella length and presents a haunting and nuanced account of Yunior's father and his search for wealth.

Jonathan Davis delivers an amazing performance on the audio. His Spanish seems very close to native, which adds to the power of this book.
