Baran, by the great Iranian director, Majid Majidi, is just an absolutely beautiful story. The film takes place at an Iranian construction site where the daily labors are difficult and arduous. The workers are a mix of Iranians and illegal Afghan refugees trying to avoid the war between the Taliban and the Northern Alliance. It takes place just a short time before 9/11. It tells of an infatuation that progresses into an undemanding deep love, where the act of love is its own reward. I saw the trailer after the movie. Believe me, this is one trailer that would spoil the magic of the entire movie if it were seen prior to seeing the film.

A wonderful, moving film.

The actors were flat and seemed like they were reading their lines at times. A much better film about a girl pretending to be boy so her family could survive is "Osama".

Another brilliant film directed by the Iranian genius, Majid Majidi. "Baran" tells the story of a young country girl who can only find work by pretending to be a boy. Do yourself a favour and follow her destiny.
