I am only giving this version 2 stars. It was well done for the time it was made. But I feel the best version I have seen that sticks closely to the novel is the 2000 version with John Malkovich & Gerard Depardieu. They both played a wonderful job capturing the true essence of the novel. They left out a lot in this version. I highly recommend seeing that version if you want a real feel to the novel.

By far, this version truly captures the essence of the novel. The direction and acting are second to none. You feel the class system and its cruelties. You feel the shame when Valjean's repents his sin in the Monsignor's house. You feel the humility and empathy when he incriminates himself in court. Perkiins was just as good playing the righteous antagonist. You understand why he had no choice in committing suicide. The cast and its acting were fantastic. Each one complements the other and, thus, makes a better movie.
