Welcome to the World
A Celebration of Birth and Babies From Many CulturesBook - 1996
In this unique anthology, poets and photographers from cultures all over the world praise the mysterious, vulnerable and awesome world of new babies. From pregnancy through the first few months of infancy, these words and images combine feelings of hope and wonder, surprise and delight, fear and fascination at the mysterious power of babies to move us - for all of us, at some level, are the parents and grandparents, older brothers and older sisters, of each new generation of children. Many of the feelings that are evoked by the birth of a child are universal, though the specific ceremonies and rituals that honor birth vary from culture to culture. In her afterword, compiler Nikki Siegen-Smith describes some of these traditions. In doing so, she reminds readers, as do the poems and photographs, just how rich and diverse is the world in which we are privileged to share our lives. Wherever it may be and whatever the circumstances in which a new child is born, the creation of new life has always been revered. With the work of artists from Africa, Bosnia, India, the USA, the Czech Republic, China, New Zealand and South Africa, to name just a few of the countries represented, Welcome to the World has been created not only to extend a welcome to our new brothers and sisters, but also to remind us that it is our responsibility to ensure their welfare: "The children are the candles white, Their voices are the flickering light. The children are the candles pale, Their sweet song wavers in the gale. Storm, abate! Wind, turn about! Or you will blow their voices out". Book jacket.
