When Ellen Carr, daughter of a militant suffragette and raised to be an intellectual, takes a job in Austria as housemother at the Hallendorf School of Music, Drama and Dance, she simply wants to cook beautiful food. What she finds is an eccentrically magical world occupied by wild children, naked Harmony teachers and experimental dancers. Life seems idyllic, but outside the castle Hitler's Reich is already casting its menacing shadow over Europe. Through her growing friendship with the mysterious groundsman Marek, Ellen encounters the dreadful reality of flight from Nazi Germany, and, on the brink of war, discovers a passion that will shape her life.

I liked this pretty well, in the sense that I like all of Ibbotson's historical fiction because of the amazing amount of detail she includes, bringing a time and a place fully to life, along with lots of wonderful characters. However, this one is a biiiiit meandering, and so I didn't really tear through it like I did some of her others. I also found the resolution of the central romance a trifle dissatisfying; however, full credit to Ibbotson for bringing pre-war Austria so vividly to life.

This is my least favorite Ibbotson book so far. The book goes off in so many directions and takes too long to cross paths and bring resolution. A disappointing ending and the evolution of the characters makes one dislike them instead of rooting for them.
