One of the things I love about Hilary McKay is that she writes such funny books, and yet she doesn't shy away from moments of great poignancy that complement, rather than detract from, the humor. That's definitely the case in this follow-up to Dog Friday, which is kind of an odd little book -- it darts between the past and present, and even involves a touch of magic. But it's a lovely read, as all of her books are.
