The author argues that the physical sciences cannot address many aspects of nature and that living organisms must be understood at every level of organization. He attempts to map out the territorial overlap between biology and the humanities, especially history and ethics.

This book will not help any newbie with biology. It is a historical review of various aspects of biology, written for those with a graduate school understanding of the subject. The author persists in using terminology only the very educated would know.

It has a few interesting insights, but not made for those who are trying to just understand the subject. More like a historical summary for a journal.
