A great book about growing up, learning how to hold on to those you love and learning when to let go. If you don't read the first book, this one is just fine on its own. All the characters are great.
Read Homecoming first. Just sayin'. Homecoming and Dicey's Song are like two parts of the same book. Homecoming is part gritty road story, part exploration of what connects and divides a group of young siblings. Dicey's Song delves more into the intricacies of connection--to people and places. Subtle books capture the way an introvert perceives and thinks about the world. Oh, and Voigt is funny...New-England-dry but laugh-aloud funny. I re-read these books from time to time.
WARNING: THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS! In the first novel in this series, Homecoming, the Tillerman children marched for months to the only place they knew of to get help, surviving the homeless journey with only their tenacity and street smarts. Now that they have finally made it to their grandmother’s home, they get a well-deserved rest in Dicey’s Song. James becomes stimulated in school, Sammy starts to fit in, Maybeth finds the right teacher, and even difficult Dicey starts to relax and make friends. To pay the price for their contented life, they must let go of their mother, but it seems like the right thing to do and a fitting ending for the little brood.
Really liked this book. I thought it was an easy enjoyable read. Sad in parts but it made you find the good as well.
I did not really enjoy this book, read it as a 46 year old though and don't think I read it as a teen. Something in it didn't seem to connect for me. I haven't read the first one so maybe that's part of the issue. Even so, I don't think the story or the writing flowed very well. I got tired of reading someone 'demanding' or 'eyes snapping' or other such writing. I really had to force myself to finish it and it wasn't a long book. I don't understand why it won a Newbery but it did. But many others have seemed to enjoy it, so try it out and judge for yourself.
