Some 13,000 year-by-year entries are each coded with a graphic symbol that signifies one of 29 areas of human endeavor, among them: politics, human rights, science, medicine, religion, education, transportation, communications, literature, music, sports, everyday life, agriculture, crime, and nutrition. The entries range from a sentence or two to several paragraphs of explanation, background, or description of people or events. Indexing is present, but should have been more thorough. For example, one of the 29 graphically-indicated subject areas is "tobacco," yet there is only one entry for tobacco in the index; a reader who wants to trace a history of tobacco and women must scan each page for the icon. Includes small bandw photos. No bibliography. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
