The enormous crocodile decides to have a human child for lunch and sets out for the village to pull tricks on the children so he can catch one to eat. As he makes his way there he brags to the other animals in the jungle about his plan. All of them are suitably horrified and come to the aid of the children as crocodile tries one tricky disguise after another. He is very clever, but the rest of the animals are determined to foil his plans. Great illustrations!

I am a substitute teacher, and a bit of a drama queen. I have "performed" this book for students in first through fifth grade! They LOVE it!! On one particular day when something unexpected happened, I brought it out and read it. The students applauded!!! I am not sure if it was me or Mr. Dahl? (My nephew learned to read because of "Matilda") I LOVE books, but need to read more!

I feel that Roald Dahl is an amazing author. As lots of people say, he has great imagination. This book is great, but I really which is was a bit longer. Most of his books aren't that long. Another Roald Dahl book that I would recommend is Matilda. I recommend that second graders and on should read this book because some parts would be scary for first graders.

I like Roald Dahl as an author. He has some wacky stuff and a great imagination. But I don't like everything he's written and this is one of them. Basically this is a story about an evil crocodile who wants to eat "juicy little children." On his way to hunt down a child to eat, he is mean to all the animals in the jungle he encounters. Then he tries his tricks to capture a child. The other animals stop him by telling the children to run. In the end, the elephant throws the crocodile into the sun.
This book is advertised for grades 1-3. I find the subject matter to be too violent and frightening for a first or even second grader. There is meanness and violence throughout the book. The thought of the croc wanting to eat a juicy little child was disgusting. I was hoping the croc would learn a lesson, but instead he gets the "death penalty." I found no moral value to this book.
Would I recommend this book? NO

This is a wonderful story! The Enormous Crocodile is hilarious and his neighbors are incredible and incredibly caring. It was great to see Muggle-Wump the Monkey and the Roly-Poly Bird in Africa prior to their adventures in The Twits. The illustrations by Quentin Blake are wonderful and, at least in the edition I had of this book, in full color.
