Somehow I missed hearing about this completely when it was released in theatres, but I recently stumbled across it. This movie is based on a real-life maritime tragedy from 1952, when a freighter was ripped in two during a storm and the coast guard attempts a rescue. The story is quite gripping overall and the scenes with the doomed freighter during the storm are very exciting and well done. There are three pretty distinct storylines during the movie: the story of the stranded crew on the freighter, the story of the coast guard vessel attempting the rescue, and a romance storyline between the lead coast guardsman and a nice girl he had met. I agree with the many critics who found the romance storyline very tepid, dull and predictable. The other two storylines are very compelling, however, and overall the film is very entertaining.
1952: a sinking tanker broken in half with 32 men aboard during a vicious winter storm, a small rescue boat with only room for 12 trying to reach them against all odds: ways better than any mission impossibles and it's all true: check out the final credits. SFX a bit unreal but hey, this is Disney!
I'm a sucker for a story about true heroics. I liked this movie. I thought it was well made, good acting, harrowing and shiver me timbers cold. Though it is another example of glad I didn't spend the bucks seeing it on the big screen. I like an epic for that.
A bunch of people who repeat lines until they get them correct try to mimic East Coast accents whilst pretending to be in love, trapped on a sinking ship, & saving victims on said sinking ship. Some of the action scenes are well-made, but this film does nothing more than educate us about a rescue that actually took place & it labours the point so tediously that you can doze off & not miss a thing. I give it 2 & ½ snoozes. Great flick if you're looking to get some shut-eye.
It's a excellent movie with great actors who give really understated emotional feeling to the movie. Nice to see Pine in a role where he is not the strongest emotional character up front but you see his strengths grow as the movie proceeds. Wierd to see Bana in a weakish character too. Great display of actors who are normally seen as super strong in a character role with strength and weakness.
Excellent movie about overt weakness and hidden strength. Something for everyone, with a satisfying resolution.
Boston accents are as inauthentic as can be. Why is that particular region so difficult for actors to mimic accurately? I blame trump.
Very nice movie, I liked it alot and I've seen more movies than most people do, I was injured and for more than a year watched about 3 movies a day ☺️. It's worth seeing if you haven't yet for sure. If you like Chris Pine, you'll like this movie.
Duty, integrity, honor and commitment. Sometimes when hubris dictates, ambition with commitment must prevail over weaker minds. Especially if there are lives at stake.....
This was a great family film. The story was compelling and well acted. For parents who are concerned, there were only a couple of objectionable words, and there were no overtly sexual jokes or other issues. Even when Bernie disobeyed orders, it was clear that, rather than making a hero of someone who habitually thinks he knows better than everyone, he was applying his morality to the situation and making a brave decision that many of us would not risk . My husband and boys (ages 9 and 13) were surprised by how much they liked this movie!
This movie is actually more accurate than you can imagine. Going through the water submerged actually happened and the captain got glass all over his skull and face from the broken windshield.
amazing what humans will do for each other...its a tense, well-acted, harrowing and uplifting movie.
A little slow to get started...maybe thats why it didtn get the notice it deserved.
But its captivating after the first half an hour.
Fabulous movie! I also cannot believe that it did not get as much notice as Sully. I do agree that his ability to think for himself and use his moral guide to decide to not leave anyone behind, was amazing. So glad they made this movie, Chris Pine is a very underrated actor, as is Casey Affeck. A good family movie as there was no sex, violent fighting, no filthy language.
Excellent movie with great cinematography! The ocean scenes are amazing and very suspenseful. I enjoyed the movie from start to finish. Give it a try, you might just find yourself on the edge of your seat!
The zen of steering a boat through a wicked storm. Discussion point for you & friends/family: is the boss a good leader? Does he make the right demands of his team?
Excellent educational movie of a real historical event. Enjoyed the bonus material interviews with the real survivors/descendants.
Too bad the movie hasn't recouped the cost of production to encourage more movies like this. If you enjoy this movie, buy this CD to add it to your home collection!
I put off seing this film because I figured I had seen this sort of thing before. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed it and I was drawn in by the characters from the beginning.
I recommend it.
This movie was brilliant. The two leads, Chris Pine and Casey Affleck, especially Affleck, inhabited their roles so well that I am surprised they did not get nominated for awards. The critics did not receive it very well and I don’t know why because my pulse was pounding the entire time – very suspenseful. So: well-acted, suspenseful, GREAT story, sympathetic characters – what more do you want in a move? Highly recommend it.
